The Red Rock Difference

In the red rocks of Canyonville, Utah, Red Rock Quarter Horses’ story began.

In the seventies, the owner’s father began getting involved with the world of horses. He broke colts, trained countless horses, and rodeoed his trained horses, as well. His family was raised around these horses, giving them the desire to be a part of this unique lifestyle as they grew up.

While he did occasionally sell horses on the side to make a living, his true passion was to train horses to reach their full potential, which took a lot of time, effort, and skill. This passion for keeping himself and his family involved in horses eventually led to his son, Rusty, feeling the pull to start taking horses from proven bloodlines and make them into rope horses.

Rusty’s father’s passion has led him to have the desire to make some of the most impressive finished horses that can be bought. His lifelong experience with training and keeping horses contributes to his eye for a great horse and his ability to take an already impressive horse and turn it into a real champion.

In addition to having a life full of hands-on experience, Rusty has learned about horse training, roping, and the ins and outs of horses from many world champions and successful professionals in the equine world. With this knowledge, he has begun making rope horses, taking the time to train and compete with each horse until they are proven winners.

Rusty began making rope horses around three years ago. He believes that this was the right time to get into this business since he has been building a wealth of knowledge over many years. He is always learning new, different methods, tips, and tricks to incorporate into his training. This ever-evolving technique means that each horse will get the best training possible, with a knowledge base that began in the seventies and continues to grow to this day.

The Red Rock Quarter Horse method for training horses is one of the biggest things that set us apart.

The care and attention to detail put into every horse is obvious from the very first look. This painstaking process turns out some true champions.

First, let’s consider what most trainers do with their horses to make a living. In most cases, the turnover rate for horses is extremely high. Usually, trainers will buy and sell upwards of eighty horses every single year. Often, little to no time is spent with these horses as they change hands. Instead, bad habits may be reinforced and new poor behaviors will be learned.

As the horses are shuffled around from barn to barn and owner to owner, they are likely not competing in many, if any, competitions. This means that they are not comfortable in the competition environment, may haul poorly, and are probably resistant when loading and unloading.

When the end buyer purchases these horses, it is likely that many hours of training will be required to get them to be good competitors or riding horses. Instead of buying a horse that has been passed along due to minor issues that others did not want to spend the time to correct, buyers could start with a Red Rock Quarter Horse and have a winner on their hands right away.

The way that Red Rock differs is that we are interested in bringing every horse to its full potential. Rather than pass them along endlessly, we take the time to learn their strengths, work on their weaknesses, and create a winning horse.

Rather than have a huge turnover, Red Rock Quarter Horse may sell two or three horses each year. This is because a lot of training hours, dedication, and money has been put into their training. The way that Red Rock trains and tests the horses are where we really shine.

For colts that need to be broken, Red Rock Quarter Horses send them out to a trainer named Dan at DM Quarter Horses. Dan puts serious time into breaking these horses, riding them every day for months, to make sure they are ready to be trained and finished at Red Rock Quarter Horses.

Each finished horse has been hauled to rodeos and competitions. And not just a few jackpots here and there, but rather a lot of different competitions at many different venues. Hauling the horses does many positive things for training.

Hauled horses are already comfortable when going to competitions. They are familiar with the atmosphere, won’t have performance anxiety, and truly enjoy doing what they are meant to do. Hauled horses are also familiar with the loading and unloading process, so they do not cause any trouble getting to and from competitions the way that more anxious horses would.

All the horses that come out of Red Rock have not only competed in roping, reining, and other competitions, but have won them, as well. We make sure that every horse is a proven winner before we consider them finished. This means that buyers will be making money right off the bat when they chose a Red Rock Quarter Horse.

The unique methods used to make our horses is the main reason that they are so impressive. They have been given the chance to prove their strengths and have put in the work to become terrific horses. This cannot be said for many of the horses that can be found for sale elsewhere.

Another big reason that Red Rock Quarter Horses are so impressive is the proven bloodlines they hail from.

Most of our horses come from proven bloodlines out of the Perkin’s Ranch in Flint, Texas.

Have over 56 years of breeding with emphasis on Poco Bueno bloodlines. And with Mr. Sun O Lena, Hya Pepto, Cats Rocket and Julias Peppy. Perkins Ranch breeding and training programs have produced NCHA Classic/Challenge Finalists, State Cutting Futurity Champions, AQHA Champions, AQHA World Champion, AQUA Reserve World Champion, AQHA Superior Performance, AQHA High point Champions and Top Five, AQHA World show Qualifiers and Finalists, AQHA Halter and Performance ROM’s, NRCHA Hackamore Champions, ACHA World Champions, IBHA World Champions, NRHA money earners, WPRA money earners, NCHA Certificate of Abilities and money earners and multiple Circuit Champions across the country.

Getting our horses from Perkin’s Ranch means they have great bloodlines and an impressive resume right from the beginning. Once we buy our horses from Perkin’s they are done exchanging hands until they are finished. We don’t pass our horses from trainer to trainer or sell horses that are not ready to prove themselves. They come from an incredible place, are trained by great people here, and move on to their proud new owner once they are finished. This is the way that finished horse buying should be.
